If you are in the market to purchase a custom rod, you should now realize what you like and do not like about a rod. In addition, you should realize that there is not one rod for every application of fishing. There are just a few things to consider. First, there is the style of fishing that you are doing. Second, there is the fish for which you primarily fish. Third, what is most important to you, accuracy, distance, and sensitivity. For example, I prefer river fishing and I mainly fish with artificial lures, jig style. The species of fish is smallmouth bass and for me, the most important characteristic is accuracy and sensitivity. Therefore, I tend to build a light power to medium light power 6 foot fast to extra fast action rod blank for accuracy. For sensitivity, I prefer a mid-modulus graphite. Also to help with sensitivity is the handle. I like a 4" – 6" rear grip and little or no fore grip. With no fore grip this helps me keep the weight down as well as allows me to place my finger directly onto the rod blank for maximum feel.
